EDITOR'S NOTE: Zoe Lizárraga, 10th grade student in Camino, is a sharp and witty commenter with a unique take on everything. In her column, Zoe Rates..., she will be offering her ratings and recommendations for various amenities in Cabo. This is the first installment.
This week, I definitely took one for the team and embarked on a matcha journey through three of Cabo’s most popular coffee spots.
Here's the tea:
Starbucks (Marina, Cabo San Lucas)
Zoe’s rating: ★★★☆☆
Price:109 mxn
The Matcha:
Predictable. Consistently inconsistent and good enough to keep you coming back, even though deep down, you know you deserve better.
The Pastries:
Corporate perfection. You’ve had them all before, and they taste exactly like they do in every other Starbucks on the planet: neither thrilling nor disappointing, just, well “there”...
The Vibe:
Chaotic minimalism. Somehow both packed and weirdly empty at the same time. The playlist slaps way harder than the coffee does, the place is small for the number of clients they have; sometimes the line extends taking up the first floor.
Docecuarenta (Medano, Cabo San Lucas)
Zoe’s rating: ★★★★★
Price:75 mxn
The Matcha:Absolute perfection. This matcha doesn’t just taste good; it feels right. It’s balanced, creamy, and worth every damn peso.
The Pastries:A selection of baked goods you won’t stop thinking about —in a good way, I promise. Whether you’re into sweet, savory, or somewhere in between, they’ve mastered it all.
The Vibe:Spacious, stylish, millennial cool. You can sip your matcha, enjoy your pastry, and feel like you’ve somehow got it together. Plus, they bring your order to your table.
Cabo Coffee (Plaza Amelia Wilkes, Cabo San Lucas)
Zoe’s rating: ★★★★☆
Price:70 mxn
The Matcha:
Surprisingly good—smooth, earthy, and just sweet enough to hit the perfect balance without ever being too much.
The Pastries:
A limited selection, but what they had was delicious. Not groundbreaking, but satisfying nonetheless.
The Vibe:
Cozy and charming with good seating options and a cute view. It’s not the trendiest spot in town, but it has a quiet charm that makes it great for studying.
Zoe’s Verdict:
If you’re in the mood for good matcha and don’t care about anything else, hit up Cabo Coffee. Want something predictable and convenient? Starbucks is… fine. But if you want matcha excellence, the best pastries, and a place that makes you feel like a main character, Docecuarenta is the clear winner.
